Great 18 Chorales, Musical Events

Sweet memories

Let’s see how good your memory is … (or how quickly you can search the blog!)

Do you remember when, in 2013, I played the complete Great Eighteen chorales of Bach, what was given out after the concert? The dates of the concerts were August 18 and 25, 2013, which may give you a clue as to what was the “cool encore.” Extra points, do you remember the flavors?

Wow, that was a big hint. Keep reading.

Do you remember what the ushers distributed after my Bach Clavierübung concert (2016)? The goodies were made by the Kapiolani Community College Culinary Arts program students.

So you must know that when I give a concert, I like to give my audience something sweet to remember—something non-musical, in fact, something to eat!

In 2013 it was scoops of Tropilicious ice cream which greeted concertgoers as they exited the church: chocolate, watermelon sorbet, mint chocolate chip and blueberry — perfect for a hot summer afternoon. I advertised it as “Come for the concert … stay for the ice cream!”

Rudy Riingen helped put the ice cream into the cups.

Then in 2016, I bought “homemade” cookies from the Culinary Arts Program students at Kapiolani Community College, and stuck a “I Love Bach” sticker on the package:

Afterwards, everyone got a cookie (baked by the students in the Culinary Arts Program at KCC)

This year, for the Dueling Bach program, concertgoers will again receive a sweet treat as a reward for listening to an hour of Bach … but you’ll have to come to the concert to find out what it is! As far as I know, no one here in Hawaii has given it out during any concert receptions, so we may be the first.

Jieun Kim Newland and I are having almost daily rehearsals on this delightful music, and both of us are feeling very good about our performance. Tomorrow we will be doing another “dry run,” for another person who happens to be on Oahu, but will not be able to attend the concert.

Tomorrow my little organ will also be picked up by S & S Delivery, en route to its new home in Maui! Yes, it has served me well, but now it’s time for someone else to enjoy it. Meanwhile, look what has been going on in Germany—can you guess what it is?!

These are all pieces of wood which will be arriving at the end of January … which, when put together will form a new instrument for the Marble Palace!
