I’m still glowing after last night’s Early Music Hawaii concert, “Portuguese Polyphony,” but not because of anything on my part. You see, I really only had one piece to play with the ensemble, so I was able to enjoy listening to most of the concert. Scott Fikse, director, assembled an A-list team of singers and… Read More One of the very best!
Today I had several visitors to my condo for lunch — and the topic was Early Music! Specifically, Early Music Hawaii, an organization I’ve been involved with since 2010 when the Lutheran Church of Honolulu collaborated with EMH to present the Monteverdi Vespers in 2010. Since then, I have been responsible for designing most of… Read More An early music luncheon
This coming weekend is the Early Music Hawaii season opener, called “Portuguese Polyphony,” Saturday night, Sept. 19 at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 7:30 pm. The Early Music Hawaii Ensemble presents a rare opportunity to experience the luminous sacred music of Renaissance Portugal in a program of richly expressive polyphony by some of the Iberian… Read More It’s Concert Week!
I’ve been home for over a week now but I’m still suffering from jet lag. I find myself waking up between 1:30 and 3:00 am every morning, in spite of going to bed around 11 pm. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to go back to sleep; other mornings I grab my phone and check my email!… Read More Deathbed music

Things were going along swimmingly until we got to the communion hymn.… Read More Authentic human moment!

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works… Read More Mud in, mud out
I recently finished rewatching, for the second time, all seven seasons of “The West Wing” television series, when government was sane. The term, “What’s next?” is President Jed Bartlet’s signature phrase in The West Wing, used to signify moving forward, tackling the next challenge, and relentless dedication to the job. It is frequently used when finishing… Read More What’s next?
This week we have been hosting the four players of New World Recorders (Gwyn Roberts, Hélöise Degrugillier, Emily O’Brien and Rainer Beckmann) and it is a real team effort to put all the pieces together. Our Early Music Hawaii president, Scott Fikse, was in Honolulu last weekend to coordinate all the details of the service,… Read More New World Recorders — a team effort
How many of us think about what kind of music we want at our funerals? My husband, Carl Crosier, talked about the music for his funeral for at least twenty years before we finally had to act on it. He had heard women at the Church of the Advent choir sing the Gregorian propers one… Read More Music for a funeral
