A bedroom rehearsal hall

For the upcoming Early Music Hawaii concert, “The Golden Age of Spanish Culture,” the ensemble has rehearsed online over Zoom, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and last night, in my bedroom! All because rehearsal space at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu has not been available.

When we remodeled our condo in 2012, I am glad that my husband and I had the foresight to install Murphy beds in both the master bedroom and in the guest bedroom. We planned on being able to put the bed up and turn the room into a mini-concert hall! In fact, we had several concerts in that space. Having a Murphy bed was the only way I could have accommodated six people (a director plus five instrumentalists) in my sleeping space.

This is what the master bedroom usually looks like.

And here are pictures of our rehearsal last night.

Join us on a journey of exploration into the dramatic sacred and secular music of renaissance Spain: Latin motets, songs in Spanish for the church and theater in the time of Cervantes, and a spectacular Kyrie and Gloria by Tomás Luis de Victoria based on the theme of Clement Jannequin’s famous chanson “La Guerre,” which celebrated the French victory at Marignon in 1515.

An ensemble of ministriles will play instrumental solos and accompany the singers on vihuela, guitar, viola da gamba, trombones and organ.

Singers include:

Singers: Andrea Maciel, Erica Glenn, Aubrey Aikens, Melissa Glenn Sarah Connelly, Andy Degan, Mark Primeaux-Redmond, Justin Hong, Buz Tennent, Keane Ishii, David Webb

Instrumentalists are:

Players: Katherine Crosier, organ; Richard Savino, vihuela/guitar; Jamey Morgan, tenor trombone; Gabe Cruz, alto trombone; Anna Callner Pare, viola da gamba

Tickets may be purchased at the door or on the Early Music Hawaii website. Saturday, September 16, 7:30 pm, Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou Street.
