Today was supposed to be focused on the Soviet years in Estonia. We did visit Rummu Quarry and Prison, an abandoned Soviet-era labor camp which closed in 2012. Our tour manager asked if anyone felt uncomfortable to stay behind on the bus, but really, this was not a Dachau or Auschwitz— people were not tortured or gassed here. In fact, some prisoners kept coming back because it was nicer than their life on the outside. However, now the buildings were vandalized of their valuables and are very run down.

In order to enter the prison, we had to walk a LONG way on these pathways of little stones. Believe me, this was more painful than walking on cobblestones, because the stones were loose and not embedded in concrete.

What made such an impression to me today was our visit to Keila Falls, located in northern Estonia on the Keila River. The surroundings contain leafy trails and parklands —the place was so green and peaceful, although a bit on the cooler side. I think the temperature ranged between 62-64 degrees F, and I was really sorry I didn’t bring a jacket on this trip.

We also made a stop at Turisalu Clifftop, offering a panoramic view of the Baltic Sea.

You can see new and old lighthouses across the street from each other.

Tonight was our farewell dinner in the hotel restaurant. Bill Potter and I both had the fish soup, baked salmon and cheesecake with caramel glaze. The Hyatt Place closed the restaurant just for our private party and the room was noisy with conversations with our new friends.

Our tour manager, Inger, distributed two group photos—you can see what a big group we are! But what was amazing and appreciated was that everyone came on time and it was a very cordial group.
