Organists and Organ Playing

Have organ … will travel

My baby organ has just left the building, on its way to the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa—where on Friday, April 26th I will be accompanying the Oahu Choral Society Chamber Choir in three works by Bach: Komm, Jesu komm; Singet dem Herrn and Cantata 4, Christ lag in Todesbanden. Esther Yoo will also conduct Herbert Howells Requiem.

The organ safely made it to St. Theresa’s, thanks to S & S Delivery

So often organists are at the mercy of whatever organ resides in the church. In fact, when I told a friend about this concert, he said, “But is there an organ at St. Theresa’s?” I answered, “I’m bringing my own organ because all they have is a ‘toaster’ ” (our euphemism for electronic instruments).

That reminds me of a post I wrote called “Memories of Sparky.

I was reminded of the story of Sparky’s Magic Piano, a record I played over and over on a 78 rpm player when I was growing up. The line that has stuck with me to this day is, “I won’t go . . . I won’t go unless my very own piano goes with me!”

… every time I sit down at a strange organ, I keep hearing Sparky’s voice: “I won’t go . . . I won’t go unless my very own (organ) goes with me!”

I am really looking forward to performing Bach with this fine choir!

(except I think it should be BWV 4, 225 and 229—not BMV 4, 225 and 229: LOL!)
