Music and motorcycles

One thing I will remember about this Prague trip will certainly be the music making by the Hawaii Masterworks Chorus in beautiful churches with acoustically ambient spaces. Last night’s concert was such a highlight for performers and audience alike. So many people came out smiling and thanking us as they left the church.

There is music all over Prague, though, and you see posters advertising music of Mozart, Haydn and the Four Seasons of Vivaldi all over town.

Here is another video of our performance which you can enjoy.

When we finished our concert in St. Michael’s in Mondsee, Austria (the wedding scene in The Sound of Music was filmed there), a woman walked up to Tim Carney, so grateful that she had stumbled upon our concert.

It turns out that she grew up in Honolulu and attended Punahou School, graduating in 1963. She moved away from Hawaii and now lives in Seattle. She came to visit the church because of the movie, then stayed for the free concert. When she heard that we were from Hawaii, she was ecstatic and just had to talk to us!

The other remembrance, though, was the fact that we happened to be in Prague the same time as a HUGE rally of Harley-Davidson motorcycles—by one estimate there are 60,000 motorcyclists here with their bikes and the noise by hordes of motorbikes has been deafening. That’s a whole bunch of motorcycles and a lot of noise!

We had a free day today but because of the motorcycle rally, our charter bus was unable to drive us into town, so we took public transportation (the subway) instead.

Several of us searched for a quiet cafe to eat a pastry and we finally found it!

As we were sitting in the shade and enjoying drinks in the cool breezes, several young British girls approached us to ask how long we were going to stay in Prague—we said we were leaving tomorrow. The girls were leaving today and wanted to give us all their Czech coins, thinking we could use them. We gratefully accepted, and used the coins to help pay for our drinks.

The Aloha spirit in Prague!
