Our dear friend has left us — too soon, too soon.

I cry with you…. and rejoice with you over Carl’s beautiful life.

    1. Dear Kathy,
Craig and I are so sad to lose our dear friend…I still remember the first day I met Carl when he came to LCH for the first time, who knew it woul be a relationship that would go on for so many years, your wedding, the death of my Mom and all the years he would play “O Holy Night” just for me on Christmas Eve (he was not overly fond of it)The first Lessons and Carols, Compline, and so many enriching experiences that we would not have ever had without our Dear Carl. Heaven will be richer with him in it, and we are better for having known him. We grieve with and for you. All of our Love, Adriane

  5. Dear Kathy,
We are so sorry about Karl. We always enjoyed playing under his direction because of his musicality and beautiful voice. Before we left the islands we chose to attend the Lutheran Church primarily because of the wonderful music we could enjoy from week to week. We know you will miss him incredibly, but hope you will find peace and joy throughout your life.

God bless you. Laurilyn and Wade

  6. Kathy – this is such a loss. God blessed us all with Carl. God be with you in this time of grief and provide you with the sure and certain hope of the resurrection in Jesus Christ. The peace of the Lord be with you and your son. -Dale

  10. Oh Kathy… Deepest condolences to you and your family. I’m so very sorry to know that Carl has lost his battle. He fought the good fight. He was such a blessing to our musical community. Thank you for sharing him and his gifts with us. May the peace of the lord enfold you and give you comfort.

  11. We are so very sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. Our prayers and condolences are with you! Carl was a huge influence on so many of us. We will miss him dearly! Requiescat in pace, Carl!

  12. Another wonderful person, gone too soon. He is probably playing beautiful music with God. Rest in peace Carl. From the parent of a Priory alumni who worked briefly with him during a few Holiday Fairs. In deepest sympathy for his wife and family.

  13. Hal and I send our deepest condolences to you and your family. Carl has a special place in so many of the lives he deeply impacted by sharing his musical gifts. He will be greatly missed.

  14. Words feel empty and inadequate to express the depth of the loss that I feel. I shall cherish the memory of the twinkle in Carl’s eye the the magnificent music of his soul. Thank you for sharing, be good to yourself, Kathy, as you have been and are very loved

  15. Oh Kathy, I am so sorry! And Jim is too. Thank you for posting this beautiful recording of his. I loved singing Sound the Trumpet with him, the Bach Passions and all the other wonderful music we did together. We will honor him. And you. Love you. xoxoxo

  16. Kathy, you have my deepest condolences. Seeing Carl’s face and then hearing his voice was a devastating surprise. Then as I continued listening, his voice became a gentle balm to ease his loss. Thank-you for the honor of allowing us to accompany your journey these past days.

  17. Dear Kathy,

I am so saddened. Carl was my link to my beloved Bach. Carl filled my life with music in a way that would not have been possible in all but a few places in this world. Through Carl I have lived a life in Hawaii that was richer than I had ever imagined on first taking a job in the middle of the Pacific. I can never repay the debt that I owe him in music, culture and his driving engagement. God’s peace be upon us all.
    In love,
    Larry Nitz

  18. My warmest thoughts go out to you and your family. All I can say is I’m glad I was one of the few that experienced his passion for the classic arts.

  19. Oh, I am so very sad to hear this news. And how fitting that my response is right after Jennifer’s! How well I remember making music with Carl and Jennifer there in Hawaii – not to mention the unbelievable meals, the delicious martinis, the stimulating conversations, and the laughter (lots of laughter). I loved Carl and cherished our friendship.

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. And may Carl rest in peace and rise in glory.
    Much love to you,
    Jonathan

  20. Oh, Kathy, I am so sorry. I feel very priviledged to have sung with him so many times and to have listened to many of his wonderful musical productions. He set a high bar that everyone else worked to reach. I have fond memories of the preparations for your wedding and preparing dinner several times that summer with McNeil Robinson. My love to you and Stephen in this difficult time.

  21. “Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening,
Into the house and gate of heaven,
To enter that gate and dwell in that house
Where there shall be no darkness not dazzling
    But one equal light;
    No noise nor silence
    But one equal music;
    No fears nor hopes
    But one equal possession;
    No ends nor beginnings
    But one equal eternity;
In the habitation of thy glory and dominion,
    World without end. Amen.”

  22. Kathy,
I am sorry I did not get to come and say goodbye to Carl. He made a great difference in my Church life in Honolulu. The first time I attended LCH, the music just made such an impression on me. I was afraid to stay away for what I might miss.
I am sure that Carl made that impression on the whole of Honolulu.
    Blessings to you and Stephen,
    Bob Zimmer

  23. Dear Kathy, I am so terribly sorry. Carl will be greatly missed! You are in our thoughts and prayers. Aloha.

  24. Katherine,
My sincerest condolences to you during this time of loss. I will never, EVER forget the caliber of music making I was so privileged to share with you and Carl at Lutheran Church of Honolulu. The entire experience was utterly transcendent and I regret that the opportunities to collaborate with him were not more frequent.
    Much love to you,
    Leon Williams

  25. Kathy – My thoughts and prayers are with you and Stephen. Carl was not just a friend, he was an inspiration and an icon. The Crosier team was amazing force of music and love. Carl inspired me with his passion and perfection. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

May God bless in this time of sadness.

    Love, Mary Fastenau

  26. Praying for peace and understanding in this sad time. My thoughts are with you and your son, Kathy. What talent God has gained in the heavenly choir.

  27. So deeply grateful to have known and sung with Carl for the short time we lived in Hawaii. Several years later when we were to have moved back, he dropped in on my daughter’s interview at the Priory School just to say yellow and welcome us back;this mean’t the world to us. Requiescat in pace.

  28. Dear Kathy,

You have my deepest condolences. I thought of Carl all day today. Here is a poem from a composer’s perspective that I wrote in 2013 which is now a piece of music for alto voice and piano.

    For The Dearly Departed

You wait in silence to hear crafted creations from the appointed one,
Guiding me as I sit sculpturing with wonder and delight,
Often thinking that you will get no chance to hear this new opus.
But music has energy that never dies,
Flowing through my senses to your formless, noble presence,
Thereby giving reassuring nods to divinely elegant black and white notations.

Requiem Aeternam Dona Eis sits on my piano waiting for a debut.

Carl will be sorely missed by many.

  29. I am so sorry, Kathy. Such a loss to the whole musical community in Hawaii and beyond. An irreplaceable force for early music and spiritual creativity. Carl’s influence will live on in our music for years to come.

  30. My condolences to you and your family.

Mr. Crosier was such a talented man. He brought life to our music and taught us a lot. How sad to lose such an amazing musician and teacher. I will never forget him and the time he dedicated to the St. Andrew’s Priory Choir. May he rest in peace.

  31. My introduction to LCH nearly 30 years ago was Compline, when I would slip over to the service on Sunday evenings after finishing my day at the church where I was pastor. I always came away spiritually refreshed and grateful for another day. The gift of ministry and love I received at LCH over the years is immeasurable. The Crosier family is at the core of this. I continue to experience the grace of God through your friendship, even though we now live half a world apart. Carl left us too soon and I am sad beyond words. His legacy will live on through his kindness and his music, not to mention his gourmet meals and killer martinis! Kathy, blessings upon you and Stephen.
    Love, Joan

  32. Kathy, I add my sincere condolences. Carl was a wonderful gift and inspiration to us all. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family, Owen

  33. dear kathy,

I am so sorry to hear the news about dear Carl . I am so sad and send you love and gratitude. what a wonderful life this is; in the hands of God we are all one.

    all my love~ Heidi

  34. Hi Kathy,

Your blog is the only way I know about you, Carl and the milieux of your lives. The common bond is church music. When “hospice” appeared, we knew this day was not far off. Still I am sorry it has come so soon.

I am so sorry for your loss. May you have the strength to carry on.

    Eric

  35. Kathy, I was only in Hawaii for one year nearly 30 years ago, but you and Carl made such a positive impact on my life while I was there. The memory of the music that Carl (with your help) brought to worship and the warmth that you both shared with me has remained with me as if my year at LCH were just last year.

  36. Kathy,
I’m in NY to preside over my cousin’s wedding and celebrate with family I rarely see. It’s been mentioned several times already our gatherings usually are for sad occasions. It seems so ironic that many will now gather to mourn such a huge loss with you, but celebrate a huge gift while we had the Crosier dynamic duo.

I’m pleased to read that so many of your Ohana made time to see Carl and tell him while he could hear how huge an impact he had on their lives and on our community.

You both were so kind, considerate and patient as you helped incorporate me into the high standards of LCH liturgy and music ministry. I am so grateful.

Few of my friends believed Hawaii could possibly have the incredible music that you and Carl so regularly produced at services and in concert. They were stunned and rather jealous. I was simply thankful you both had become a part of my life and I was all the richer for it.

I am so sorry for you and Stephen, but trust Carl now rests from his recent trials and gets to join (and probably conduct) the heavenly chorus. May God’s peace be upon you.

  37. Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten,
O Jesu, o Meister, zu helfen zu dir.
Du suchest die Kranken und Irrenden treulich.
    Ach höre, wie wir
Die Stimmen erheben, um Hülfe zu bitten!
Es sei uns dein gnädiges Antlitz erfreulich!

How many times did I have the privilege to sing these words with Carl, Kathy, with you at the organ? Our duet has been running through my head these past weeks as I’ve held you in my thoughts and prayers. Carl’s musical leadership blessed my family throughout the twenty years we lived in Hawaii. May God’s peace be with you and Stephen.

  38. Kathy, my prayers go out for Carl today and for all your family. Carl and I shared many things in common, including our love for Peter Hallock, the propagation of his work, and Compline. I will always remember walking side-by-side with Carl leading the procession after singing Compline at Canterbury Cathedral in 2000, when we went down to the crypt to sing Peter’s anthem “Bring us, O Lord, at our last awakening.” My father’s name was also “Carl,” and I will always think of the two of them on their memorials from now on.

  39. Mahalo piha, Carl.

I am relieved Carl’s gone to his reward, a chance at those perfect pitch angels as was mentioned last night. Carl gently encouraged me (over a few long years) to get out from behind the guitar, face my stage fright, and even sing to God’s glory at his 25th anniversary service as LCH cantor. His passion for Bach and gourmet cooking will be remembered certainly by we who treasure quality in a person. Imagine this hick from Kaua’i having the Crosiers perform their magic at our wedding. God’s embracing you, Kathy, Stephen, and little sis, Carol.

  40. Kathy and Stephen,
My condolences to you. Your family has become my family in Honolulu. Carl did so much to make me feel a part of the ohana. I am so thankful to you and Carl for that. I am thankful for all the beautiful music you both have provided for so many years. I am thankful that Carl is in a better place with choirs of angels to conduct. I look forward to being with you all in eternity.

  41. The music world has lost a champion for Early Music, but the Celestial Choir has gained a first-rate musician as conductor, countertenor, and keyboard player. Carl, you will be greatly missed, but thank you for your legacy. May you REST IN PEACE, free from suffering of this mortal body, and RISE IN GLORY.

Kathy, you are the COOLEST person I know. Even though you will find it difficult to live on without Carl, no doubt you will continue to make a wonderful contribution to society.

My thoughts and prayers are ever with you and Stephen.
    With heart-felt condolences and affection,
    Edith

  42. Kathy,
Such a great loss! My condolences go out to you and your family. He is playing the organ and singing with the angels now. He will be missed.
    Judy

  43. Dear Kathy,
You and your loved ones will continue to be held in my heart and prayers. Peace be with you all. It was a blessing and a gift to have been able to know Carl, however briefly, on this earth, and to know of the enormous and grace-filled influence he had and will continue to have in the realms of music and church and spirit.
    Yours,
    Kathryn

  44. Kathy,

I knew you both for such a short time – AGO’14 – but look so fondly on our having met, thanks to E.H. Know that I share your sadness with many others around the world and celebrate Carl’s life and your life together.

    Frank

  45. Dear Kathy,
So sorry to hear the sad news. I’m sorry for having lost touch, but hearing of Carl’s passing flooded my mind with memories of surprising intensity. I sang a number of concerts and recitals with you, Carl, and my dad, Dick Larson.

Great parties and great food aside, the first thing that I think of when I think of Carl, is Compline. To this day, those were some of the most fulfilling musical experiences in my life; one rehearsal, one (maybe two) on a part, and oh the music! I pride myself on my musical abilities, but seldom have I felt that sense of accomplishment that I had after singing Compline with Carl.

Carl’s and your passion for your art made for some memorable rehearsals; at times, it was both maddening and hilarious, but in the best possible way… always passionate, always productive, always worth it! It was such a privilege. Thank you, thank you!

My thoughts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with you and your family.

    Robert Larson

  46. I am so sorry to hear of his passing! Words cannot express the emotion of a loved one gone. As a parent at the Priory, I only knew him as the “go to guy in finance office”. Although he has left us, the spirit will remain in all our hearts and he is flying freely above and we shall celebrate his new life.

  47. Dear Kathy and Stephen,

My heart is full of memories of my cherished friendship with Carl. We go back a long way, in a mutually admiring and supporting alliance that remains dear to me. And getting to know you, and a bit of Stephen, added to the meaning of that friendship over the years.
What a thoughtful, kind man, and splendid musician he was. Now he has gone to join ‘The Choir Invisible, whose music is the gladness of the world.’ You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Robin McCabe

  48. Tomas and I send our heartfelt condolences to you and Stephen. May light perpetual shine on Carl, and may you have peace in your hearts.

  49. Condolences to you, Katherine, and blessings on Carl for a life well-lived. Thank both of you for the many gifts of music.

  50. Cathy, our deepest condolences to you and the family, and may God provide you with strength during this difficult time.

  51. Condolences to you and Stephen. I have so many memories of LCH and you and Carl were such a great part of that. May God grant you only good memories and ease your pain at his passing.

  52. May the risen Christ comfort you in your time of sorrow. Carl is now able to sing praises in the Kingdom of Heaven! Peace be with you.

  53. Kathy, Sarah and I are so very sorry for your loss, and we’re so shocked and saddened by this news. Carl was an inspiring figure, to have lived as meaningful a musical life as he did, and to have touched as many lives and awakened so many people to the great music he loved, with such missionary zeal–what a wonderful legacy he leaves! And Sarah and I will also cherish the memory of the gracious hospitality and excellent bar tending that was our first experience of Carl. May his memory be a blessing. We will keep you in our prayers, and we hope and trust that the large and loving community of which you two were and are such a crucial part will care for and warm you. Peace be with you.

  54. Dear Kathy,

I have no words to express the sorrow of which I feel for your loss of a husband and music-colleague. I am very grateful for the privilege Carl granted me to let me sing in the Compline Choir and Church Choir. I believe that he has entered the Church Eternal and will take his place among the myriad of Cantors and Kapellmeisters who have gone on before him and to make music in praise of our Triune God.

Вечная Память (Eternal Memory) Carl Crosier!

    Johannes Bendtz

  55. Katherine — I, too, am so shocked and saddened by this news. My condolences. It was so nice to visit with you and Carl at Peter Hallock’s service in May.

  56. I remember to this day the first time I attended a service at LCH. I was in Hawaii on a business trip. When the choir got up to sing, I swiveled my head around to look at them so fast that I should have gotten a major case of whiplash. They were that impressive. But it wasn’t for show; it was music for the glory of God and in His service. In other words, it was worship. So, it was a given that I would join Carl’s choir when I moved to Hawaii. I owe a lot to Carl. Within the limits of my talent, I learned how to sing and, more importantly, to be a chorister. I treasure the opportunity I had to sing such glorious music under Carl’s direction, and I hope someday to join him in the Heavenly Choir, where I am sure he is counter-tenor soloist!

    Dick Griffin

  57. My deepest condolences to you in your grief and loss.

We had the privilege to hear you and Carl at LCH during several visits to Hawai`i over the past 20 years. It was a grand experience I hope never to forget.

Eternal rest grant unto him … and much aloha and many prayers for you and your family.
