A new home for Else!

If you have been reading this blog since November 2020, you may remember the post I wrote about my husband’s fortepiano, “The fortepiano returns!”

Carl Crosier and his former piano teacher, Else Geissmar, in front of her Seattle house

You may recall that my husband, Carl, was the recipient of a Philip Belt fortepiano upon the death of his college piano teacher, Else Geissmar. Then when Carl died, he bequeathed the fortepiano to our friend, Mark Russell, and I bought a small pipe organ.

Now Mark is moving and will have no space for the fortepiano in his new apartment. So yesterday, the fortepiano was moved back to my condo. I have spent the last two days rearranging the furniture in my living room to accommodate this 7’2″ musical instrument!

Carl and Else played a duet on the fortepiano.

It’s now June, and the fortepiano has been sitting in my living room ever since. But all that is changing because the fortepiano, nicknamed “Else” is on its way to a new home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina!

And who might the new owner be? Why, it’s Joey Fala, my former organ student, who I know will love and appreciate its beauty. When Joey and his wife, Sarah, visited in May, he tried out the fortepiano. Little did we know then, that the instrument would soon be in his home!

Joey played a Clementi sonata on the fortepiano, while Sarah turned pages.

Here is the crew from S & S Delivery doing their always excellent job of wrapping and moving the fortepiano to their warehouse where it will then be placed in a piano crate and then delivered to M Dyer & Sons moving company for transport across the ocean.

Goodbye, Else … hope to see you again one day!

  1. […] A couple of weeks ago, I did another “match” between people and instruments when I shipped off my husband Carl’s fortepiano to its new owner, my former student Joey Fala, now living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The more I think about it, the more pleased I am that the instrument will be going to a good home, where it will be loved and appreciated. Go back and read my post, “A new home for Else.” […]
