Organists and Organ Playing

I’m a Retiree, really?!

Yesterday I atttended the annual Iolani Christmas concert with the orchestra and chorus, an event to which the “Retirees” are special guests, with a luncheon following. I “retired” after twenty years as Chapel Organist at the school, but even now, continue to accompany the Iolani Chorus and Hokuloa Singers for their winter and spring concerts, on the invitation of the director, John Starr Alexander. In fact, this afternoon is the dress rehearsal for tomorrow night’s concert at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

Yesterday, though, the concert was in the Lower Gym, as you can see by these photos.

Kathy Hafner, director, has grown the Iolani Orchestra tremendously. I could hardly believe this is a high school orchestra—they were so accomplished and took some breakneck tempos.

I sat next to Cindy Scheinert at the concert—she is now retired. She was the fifth grade homeroom teacher who introduced me to my former student, Joey Fala, so long ago, and recognized his passion for learning to play the organ.

After the concert we were treated to a catered luncheon in the Sullivan Center.

A continuous slideshow was playing with all the pictures of the retired teachers and staff (our numbers are growing!) and I found my photos there.

I had to dash home right after I finished lunch to meet the dishwasher installer. Did you know that the day after Thanksgiving is not only called Black Friday? — but it is known as Brown Friday as people in the plumbing profession call it. Yup, my sink backed up on Thanksgiving, not because I was throwing grease down my sink, but perhaps because people in the floors above me did! Not only did I have to call a plumber to clear the clog, but it turned out my dishwasher also died, and I was forced into buying a new one for myself for Christmas. Harrumph!
