Organists and Organ Playing

A musical wall and more

I have just arrived back in Boston with a stopover in Rome and even though it’s now 12:30 am back in Greece, I feel I have to stay up since I will be flying to California tomorrow afternoon.

In looking through my several hundred photos of Greece, I thought this home in Oia had an unusual decoration on its outside wall. You can see that in addition to treble and bass clefs, there is also an alto (C clef) in the middle.

I took some last minute photos from the 9th floor restaurant in the Wyndham Grand Hotel with its expansive views, including the Acropolis.

What a great place to have breakfast!

On the way to the airport, we passed a statue of a runner, created for the Olympic Games and made out of glass panels.

Oh, I loved Greece! In spite of the heat, I would love to go back again!

I arrive in Los Angeles late tomorrow night and will have a few days to spend with my family before the 2019 West Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists begins on Sunday, June 30th in Irvine, CA.

Donald Matsumori

I am sorry that I will miss the memorial service of Honolulu organist Donald Matsumori, which is Saturday, June 29th. Donald (aged 86) was the music librarian at Sinclair Library at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and was also organist at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Kaimuki. He faithfully attended AGO meetings, organ recitals and Symphony concerts and always greeted me. He also served as adjudicator for our Hawai’i Chapter AGO scholarship program. I will miss his sweet and gentle personality.

Donald told me that after he retired, he began each day by practicing a Bach prelude and fugue. What dedication!
