Organists and Organ Playing

Guess who’s coming to dinner?

All ready for the party!

61 people “liked” my post when I asked this question on my Facebook page with some photos. Only one person, Susan Haas, seemed to know what I was up to when I showed off my dining table.

If you count the number of plates, you will come up with the number nine—which is how many guests I was expecting. It was only about a half hour into my guests’ arrival that I realized with horror that I had forgotten to set a place for myself!

The guest of honor was my former student, Joey Fala, who had brought his girlfriend, Sarah Jones, from North Carolina, and the rest of the guests were members and spouses of the Hawaii Chapter American Guild of Organists Executive Board.

I happened to see one of my neighbors in the hallway in the afternoon, and invited him to see my table. He asked the question, “There are that many organists in Honolulu?” when I told him that most of the people that were coming were organists.

When I found out that Joey was returning to Honolulu for a visit, I immediately made plans to meet him and Sarah for lunch. We met last Friday at the Forty Carrots restaurant in Bloomingdale’s, a place Joey took me on his last visit to Hawaii.

But I knew I had to invite other members of the AGO Executive Board for an opportunity to meet with Joey, as he has grown up before our very eyes. He first came to the attention of the AGO when he was just in fifth grade, and came to his very first AGO meeting at the home of John and Betsy McCreary. I believe John accompanied the silent film, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” on his home theatre pipe organ.

So when that young boy brings A GIRL home to Hawaii, it’s cause for celebration! I did have the food catered, and made a few extra dishes besides. I forgot to take a picture of the entrée which was two kinds of homemade pasta, chicken in a cream sauce, and pesto primavera, caesar salad, and garlic French bread.

It’s been a long, long time since this apartment was filled with so much laughter! I don’t think I have laughed so much in ages, and it was wonderful to share the good times with my AGO buddies.I was going to have us take a group selfie, then forgot about it. You can see my reflection in the glass window!

(P.S. Everyone gave Sarah a thumbs up! As Karl Bachman said, “She’s good people!”
