Last night when we came home from choir rehearsal, we saw a long line of cars at our local gas station and wondered what was going on. We turned on the TV and learned of the devastating earthquake in northern Japan and subsequent tsunami threat to Hawaii.

It’s now 8 am and Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle has just issued an all-clear for people to return to their homes. Carl worried about the Bach Collegium Japan and their upcoming trip to the U.S. “Omigod, I wonder whether their trip has been cancelled?”

The news is good. “Earthquake and Tsunami Leave Bach Collegium Japan Members Unharmed” were this morning’s  headlines from Grand Rapids, MI where the first U.S. concert will take place at Calvin College.

We are scheduled to leave Thursday night to attend their “Mass in B Minor” performance on Saturday night in Valporaiso, IN. We will also attend a rehearsal and a reception in their honor.

What a relief that they are safe. You can see a video clip of the Bach Collegium Japan’s performance of the Bach St. John Passion opening movement here.
