We are in rehearsal–Again!

Thursday night was our one and only rehearsal with the percussionists for Peter Hallock’s “The Last Judgment,” which will take the place of the sermon at both  8  and 10:30 am services on Sunday, November 14th.

The three percussionists are Stephen Dinion (timpani and vibes), Ira Wong (chimes and tamtam) and Travis Kaneshiro (bass drum and tamtam).

Then last night (Friday) was the one and only choral rehearsal for John Rutter’s “Requiem,” which is being sung in memory of Lyn Klein, wife of long-time director of music at Waiokeola Congregational Church, Bud Klein. Bud has sung in the Compline Choir nearly from the beginning, and now sings in the LCH Choir as a bass.

We see from the concert program that Stephen Dinion and Ira Wong will also be performing the Rutter “Requiem” with us. Steve moved the timpani into Waiokeola last night so it means we will have seen him four days in a row. Wow!

The concert today will be conducted by Dr. Charlene Archibeque from San Jose State University. I was very interested to see her at work, to pull together this beautiful piece in just a single rehearsal with a strange choir. For most of the choir, it is their first experience with the work, and many of them were sightreading.

As we were driving home last night, Carl turned to me and said, “You know, within the space of one month, we will have performed in FOUR concerts, if you count the Hallock “Last Judgment!” They were:

1) Our milestone birthday concert, “If music be the food of love,” on October 11th

2) The Monteverdi Vespers on November 5th and 7th

3) John Rutter, “Requiem” on November 13th

4) Hallock, “The Last Judgment,” on November 14th

I don’t think we’ve been home for about two weeks!
