I’ve been home for over a week now but I’m still suffering from jet lag. I find myself waking up between 1:30 and 3:00 am every morning, in spite of going to bed around 11 pm. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to go back to sleep; other mornings I grab my phone and check my email!… Read More Deathbed music
It’s a Sunday morning in Hawaii and instead of playing for church services, I’m sitting at home in my shorts! That is because Tropical Storm Lala which became Hurricane Lala, knocked out the power for 197,000 Hawaiian Electric customers with its intense rain and wind—including St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. In effect, no electricity means no… Read More No electricity… no organ!
It’s Day 10 after returning from Iceland, and I’ve been so incredibly busy that I can hardly keep up with myself! This is Concert Week — on Saturday, there’s an Early Music Hawaii concert called “The Musical Journey: From New England to Honolulu,” with director Scott Fikse conducting music described as: The Early Music Hawaii… Read More Hitting the ground running!
Ten years ago, on August 28, 2014, at 4:00 pm, the earthly life of my husband of 37 years, ended at St. Francis Hospice in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. I can’t believe that it was just a week ago that I was sitting at the Honolulu airport getting ready to fly out to California. My red-eye flight was delayed, which meant that we left after midnight and I arrived in Burbank on Monday afternoon (with a layover in San Francisco). We picked up my… Read More A whirlwind week
At Christmas time I stayed two nights on the island of Kauai, where I played a concert with the Kauai Chorale, under the leadership of Shane Morris Wise. Even though it’s been an absolute ton of work, I’m really enjoying playing the organ at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Like this past weekend: I played three services there (Friday night Candlemas, Sunday morning Solemn High Mass and Sunday afternoon Vespers and Benediction), in addition to the 9 am service at Nuuanu Congregational Church, making… Read More Sore neck no more!
It’s been awhile since I bought an iPad to substitute for all the paper I’m burning through as an organist at two different churches, but as of now, I’ve been too afraid to use the iPad in the service. Instead, I’ve relied on all my paper copies of the sheet music, being that I don’t… Read More Christmas Eve iPad debut!
If indeed the period between Halloween and Christmas is called the season of excess, I’ve got it in spades! As you may have learned, I have two completely different church positions, taking up much of my waking hours. Let me share with you what parts of the service I play on the organ: Nu‘uanu Congregational… Read More Too many notes … too much!
