61 people “liked” my post when I asked this question on my Facebook page with some photos. Only one person, Susan Haas, seemed to know what I was up to when I showed off my dining table. If you count the number of plates, you will come up with the number nine—which is how many… Read More Guess who’s coming to dinner?
After playing for two services each Sunday for the last three weeks at Holy Nativity, this coming Sunday I’m going to be back at Waiokeola Congregational Church filling in for Gloria Faltstrom. You remember that the last time I was scheduled to play there, I couldn’t get the organ to turn on and ended up… Read More Lazy organist? or one music fits all!
Tonight (Thursday!) I attended the organ recital by Elmo Cosentini and what I was amazed at most was his footwear—boat shoes! His program was: Offertoire sur les grands jeux (Mass for the Parishes) – François Couperin Trio Sonata No. 5 in C, BWV 529 – J. S. Bach Fantaisie in F minor, K. 608 –… Read More Boat shoes!
These days, we think nothing of getting onto an airplane and flying across the ocean for a vacation. This past year I traveled to Europe on three separate trips (Amsterdam, Austria, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, England and Switzerland) and I’ve just booked my 2019 travels with again three trips to Europe (England, Greece, and… Read More Telemann’s Holiday in Paris
There may a good reason why concerts are booked on the weekends—during the week days (Mondays through Thursdays), it’s considered a “school night”—and kids have to go to school; people have to get up to go to work on the next morning. Meetings of all kind are scheduled on weeknights, and Thursdays particularly, were “made… Read More In the middle of the week?
Not long ago I posted this picture in connection with my 50th high school reunion in Burbank, California: The photo, along with a short article, appeared in the Burbank Daily Review newspaper, and I saved both in a scrapbook. I believe it was in January of 2013 that I finally sat down to open our Christmas cards,… Read More Fifty years later …
I recently attended my high school reunion—the 50th anniversary reunion of Burbank High School’s Class of 1968 , where the showing of a reunion video was one of the highlights of the weekend. The theme was “Back to Burbank,” and was based on the movie “Back to the Future” with the clock in the DeLorean… Read More Back to the future
Yesterday was my birthday and I chose to forego my usual 2-1/2 mile walk by writing replies to everyone who sent me greetings through Facebook and email. Really, the day was like any other: I taught three organ lessons, including one at the First Church of Christ Scientist, where my student, Sachi Hirakouji, is the… Read More Birthday greetings for an organist
Last weekend was the 79th birthday of Joseph Hansen, whom you may remember was the Music Director of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu before Carl Crosier. Joe sent me a long email last August about the Beckerath organ selection process—much of which I never heard before. I knew that Carl was sent to the mainland to… Read More Another piece of the puzzle
Last night Central Union Church and the Hawaii Chapter American Guild of Organists honored Nyle Hallman on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Ten organists performed, including the birthday girl herself, who was rewarded with a sustained standing ovation. All three of her children were in attendance, plus Nyle’s sister and other family members who… Read More Nyle’s night
