It’s Monteverdi Time!

October 18, 2010

Launching the first-ever in Hawaii performance of the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 is probably equal in scope to our 2000 performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and the 2004 performance of Bach’s St. John Passion. Like climbing Mount Everest! To let you know how massive an operation this is, here are some of the things… Read More It’s Monteverdi Time!

Children’s Sabbath at LCH, Oct. 17th

October 15, 2010

This Sunday at LCH we will observe Children’s Sabbath, a national celebration of “children as sacred gifts of the Divine, and (an) opportunity for houses of worship to renew and live out their moral responsibility to care, protect and advocate for all children,” according to the Children’s Defense Fund official website. We have done this… Read More Children’s Sabbath at LCH, Oct. 17th

If music be the food of love

October 9, 2010

For the last week or so, Carl and I have been rehearsing for our first Abendmusiken concert of the season, which will be on Monday, October 11th at 7:30 pm. It’s a program similar to one we did eight years ago for our 25th wedding anniversary, “25 Years of Making Music.” This time, though, we… Read More If music be the food of love

A Bach Choral Prelude

October 6, 2010

This week I’ve been working on Bach’s choral prelude on “Nun danket alle Gott” for the organ prelude at the 10:30 service. When I first started to play the organ at age thirteen, my teacher mentioned the term “choral prelude” to me nearly at the beginning, but I really didn’t understand it in the context… Read More A Bach Choral Prelude

Mostly Mendelssohn

October 2, 2010

At tomorrow’s 10:30 am service, Oct. 3rd, I will be playing music by 19th century composer, Felix Mendelssohn, 1809-1847. The organ prelude and postlude will be from the Sonata No. 2 in C minor, a piece I first learned in high school, and the second movement of which is unusual in that it is written… Read More Mostly Mendelssohn

The brochure is out!

October 2, 2010

It’s common knowledge that there has never been a publication without a mistake in it — “To err is human” — right? This past week, volunteers Vreni Griffith, Nedra Walker, Jeannette Johnson and Ian Capps spent many, many hours on preparing our Abendmusiken season brochure for mailing. Most unfortunately, the ticket order form had a… Read More The brochure is out!

Ready, set . . . PRINT!

September 22, 2010

For the last month, the Concert Committee has been hard at work to finalize a season brochure to send out to our music mailing list. I just got a notice today that the brochures are being delivered TOMORROW, and so the next step will be to stick on address labels and take them to bulk… Read More Ready, set . . . PRINT!

Schütz’ Symphoniae Sacrae

September 21, 2010

This Sunday, September 26th at the 10:30 am service, we are in for another musical treat. The offertory will be one of Heinrich Schütz’ concertos or sacred symphonies, “Vater Abraham, erbarme dich mein, SWV 477.” It is an exact repetition of the Gospel lesson (Luke 16:19-31) for this Sunday, except it’s in German. David Del… Read More Schütz’ Symphoniae Sacrae

Mmmmm . . . Mozart!

September 17, 2010

This Sunday, Sept. 19th at the 10:30 service, we are going to have a mini-Mozart festival. The service will begin with soprano Georgine Stark, singing the “Laudate Dominum” from the Vesperae de Dominica, K. 321 as the prelude. This is a real “tour de force” for both soprano and accompanist (that’s me!) We’re actually going… Read More Mmmmm . . . Mozart!

Marcel Dupré, organist extraordinaire

September 15, 2010

When I was seventeen, I had the great fortune of going to Paris and studying with the French virtuoso, Marcel Dupré. Of course, at the time, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have this experience, and even though I thought I was pretty good at the time, I really knew NOTHING much about… Read More Marcel Dupré, organist extraordinaire
