Pastor Fritz Fritschel wrote this poem about Carl Crosier’s love of music and food: We all know of the cantor’s gastronomic prowess— What we remain uncertain about is how is He going to leave behind the churchly pattern Of liturgy, incense, chanting, chalice and paten To devote himself to the diurnal duties that now is… Read More Mix and Match
Anyone who knows Carl knows that whenever there is going to be a celebration, there’s going to be food! Not only had Carl planned yesterday’s service to the last detail, he also meticulously planned what food he wanted to cook for his own retirement dinner. The guest of honor was soprano Vicki Gorman, who had… Read More The REAL retirement celebration
Dear People of LCH, This day, one long anticipated, has finally come. What a wonderful journey these past 38 years have been for me. When I think back to the countless regular and special worship services and the many church concerts that I have been involved in, I thank God for this wonderful opportunity to… Read More A message from the Cantor
Today is August 21st, 2011 — a day we knew about fifteen months ago when Carl wrote a letter to the congregation “Journeys come to an end.” Today was Carl’s last service at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu as its Cantor. Rather than being a day of sadness, it was a time of celebration and… Read More A day of rejoicing
This afternoon we had the final dress rehearsal with orchestra for the Haydn ‘Lord Nelson Mass,” the last major work Carl will conduct as Cantor of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. In earlier posts, I have written about passing the torch concerning the younger generation and the pipe organ. Last night we rejoiced with Naomi Castro as it was announced that she has accepted the choral directorship at St. Andrew’s Priory, where Carl Crosier is the chief financial officer and soprano Rachel Lentz teaches math. Soprano… Read More From generation to generation, Part II
Tonight was Carl’s last Thursday night choir rehearsal, even though ordinarily we don’t have Thursday night rehearsals in the summer time. We sure didn’t get much sleep last night because although we went to bed about 9:30 pm, we got up at 2:30 AM (!) to finish typing the bulletin before going off to work.… Read More Second Haydn Rehearsal
There are just four days left before Carl Crosier’s final service and the countdown has begun! You’ll never guess what we’re doing? Yup, typing the final bulletin and since Friday is a holiday this week (Admissions Day in Hawaii), it means that everything has to be finished by tonight so that the church office can… Read More Four days to go and counting
At last night’s service, officiant John Bickel wrote this beautiful bidding prayer on the eve of the Feast of St. Mary (and Carl’s last Compline): God of Joy and Music: On this night we remember Mary the mother of Christ. Thou hast chosen a humble virgin to give birth to the Savior of the world.… Read More Bittersweet Compline
After dinner at the party last night, it was time for the choir to thank Carl for his inspiration and leadership at LCH for 38 years. Jean Geil, alto, wrote and sang verses in honor of our choir directors: (Tune: March of the Three Kings) Allen, our friend, deserves our praise today, About twenty years… Read More Kudos to Carl
