Organists and Organ Playing

Treasures of the French Baroque

Last Sunday morning I was in my Zürich hotel getting ready to go to the airport when I got a text message from United Airlines saying that my flight would be delayed by 85 minutes. That meant that I would have missed my connection in San Francisco, but luckily I was able to rebook a flight directly to Honolulu instead of having an additional stop in Los Angeles. The saving grace was that I was upgraded to first class, but the long flight was still an ordeal, making my arrival into Honolulu at 8:00 pm HST, some 21 hours in transit.

Flying first class made the long trip a little more bearable!

I’m afraid I took the next few days trying to adjust to the 12-hour time zone difference which I did with some difficulty, waking up at midnight or 1 am for several days in a row.

In the meantime besides teaching a few organ lessons, I’ve finished the program layout for the “Treasures of the French Baroque” concert by Early Music Hawaii on Saturday, September 15 at 7:30 pm at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

Here is a poster I designed:

I won’t be playing in this concert, but I’ve heard rumors that the rehearsals are going very well. If you’d like to see the program, click here. As written in the program: The Early Music Hawaii Choir was formed in 2013 under the artistic direction of the late Carl Crosier. The core group has since appeared in several guises as a chamber ensemble and in their form today as multiple soloists and choral singers. They are made up of Honolulu’s finest early music performers, most of them recognized as veterans in the performance of this repertory. This evening we welcome several new members as others have moved away.

Singers include: Taylor Ishida, Andrea Maciel, Georgine Stark (sopranos), Sarah Lambert Connelly and Sarah Young (alto), Jonathon-Michael Palompo and Bowe Souza (tenor), Scott Fikse and David Webb (bass) with the additions of Ian Capps and Guy Merola in the 10-voice Dumont.

Instrumentalists include: Darel Stark and Maile Reeves (violin); Philip Gottling III and Nancy Welliver (recorder); Anna Womack (viola) and Anna Callner (viola da gamba); and Jieun Kim Newland (organ and harpsichord).

Tickets are available at the door or online at the Early Music Hawaii website.
