I’m still glowing after last night’s Early Music Hawaii concert, “Portuguese Polyphony,” but not because of anything on my part. You see, I really only had one piece to play with the ensemble, so I was able to enjoy listening to most of the concert. Scott Fikse, director, assembled an A-list team of singers and… Read More One of the very best!
This coming weekend is the Early Music Hawaii season opener, called “Portuguese Polyphony,” Saturday night, Sept. 19 at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 7:30 pm. The Early Music Hawaii Ensemble presents a rare opportunity to experience the luminous sacred music of Renaissance Portugal in a program of richly expressive polyphony by some of the Iberian… Read More It’s Concert Week!
My Advent Organ Chorales concert was over just about an hour ago, and I have breathed a HUGE sigh of relief that there were no disasters! Being that it was a Facebook Live event, it means that there was no stopping allowed, no do overs, no “Wait, can we try that again.” I have to… Read More Whew! No disasters!
Last Sunday morning I was in my Zürich hotel getting ready to go to the airport when I got a text message from United Airlines saying that my flight would be delayed by 85 minutes. That meant that I would have missed my connection in San Francisco, but luckily I was able to rebook a… Read More Treasures of the French Baroque

Enough of this jet lag! Just yesterday, I figured that I’d better start working on the music for next weekend’s Early Music Hawaii concert, especially since I was to attend my first rehearsal last night. The concert features Scott Fikse conducting the Early Music Hawaii Singers and Players and will take place at the Lutheran… Read More Prepping for Purcell
How many times have I stepped off the organ platform at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu? A zillion times, to be sure. But tonight after the Early Music Hawaii concert (which went very well, by the way), I misjudged the distance to the floor. The next thing I knew, my eyes were face to face… Read More Swan dive!
Ever since I returned from my mainland trip, I have had to hit the ground running. For the last three nights I have rehearsed with the Early Music Hawaii Chamber Singers for our concert tomorrow night, 7:30 pm at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. It has made for some very long days, each beginning with… Read More Kings and Queens
Yesterday I have to admit that the period between 5:30 and 6:15 pm was pretty frantic. I actually had a relaxing day, as my only task was to find a piece of jewelry to wear to dress up my outfit. And I finally found it—an opal-esque pendant from Walmart that only cost $5! However it took… Read More Clavierübung—so many notes!
Tonight was the dress rehearsal for my Bach Clavierübung concert and I am happy to report there were no train wrecks—at least in my part! As you will see in the program, this body of Bach’s chorale preludes are among his most complex and technically demanding of all his organ works. Thirty-seven years ago, Carl Crosier… Read More No train wrecks!
