The year 2024 marks 100 years since the birth of organist, composer, liturgist and countertenor Peter R. Hallock (November 19, 1924-April 27, 2014). Even though Peter’s 100th birthday is not until November, the celebrations will take place all year, beginning with a pair of concerts this coming weekend. I will be leaving Thursday night for… Read More Hallock at 100
Yesterday I woke up to a text on my phone that our dear friend, organist and harpist Nyle Hallman, had passed away. That was confirmed in a phone call with her daughter, Kathy Hallman, who was her mother’s constant companion, page turner and harp mover. We send our deepest condolences to the Hallman family at… Read More Rest in peace, Nyle
Even though it’s been an absolute ton of work, I’m really enjoying playing the organ at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Like this past weekend: I played three services there (Friday night Candlemas, Sunday morning Solemn High Mass and Sunday afternoon Vespers and Benediction), in addition to the 9 am service at Nuuanu Congregational Church, making… Read More Sore neck no more!
By all accounts it has been a baaaaad week. It started when I tried to update the Early Music Hawaii website, where I am the webmaster. I needed to add information about the upcoming concert, Tourdions! by the early music ensemble, Ciaramella on March 9 and 10. Here’s the postcard I designed. To my shock,… Read More Suckered again!

There has been a murder at the Maison de la radio in a musical instrument.– That’s it.– By the way, there was a mistake. You wrote “in a musical instrument”, you should have written “with a musical instrument”. No, that was it. In a musical instrument. The above was translated dialogue from the television show,… Read More Murder in a musical instrument
You probably have heard this quote which has been attributed to Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who perished in the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle accident. She may not have originated the expression, but she did bring a T-shirt with this imprinted on it, and she certainly popularized it, according to a Wikipedia article I read. So,… Read More I touch the future, I teach
It’s been awhile since I bought an iPad to substitute for all the paper I’m burning through as an organist at two different churches, but as of now, I’ve been too afraid to use the iPad in the service. Instead, I’ve relied on all my paper copies of the sheet music, being that I don’t… Read More Christmas Eve iPad debut!
To say that I have survived a big weekend is an understatement! I got up at 4:45 am on Friday morning to catch an early Hawaiian Airlines flight to Lihue, Kauai, where I was met at the airport by my student, Daniel Welch. We drove straight to All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa, where I… Read More Big weekend!
