Last Sunday morning we attended the service at the Chapel of the Resurrection, having attended the Bach Collegium Japan’s performance of the Mass in B Minor the night before. We were quite surprised to see that the configuration of the building had changed, with the pews facing a small altar near the back. Apparently a crew… Read More Sunday at Valpo
Last weekend, we were in heaven listening to the Bach Collegium Japan’s performance of Bach’s “Mass in B Minor.” Last night, we came crashing back to earth with a giant THUD when several key singers were absent from the fourth choral rehearsal of this same work. But why did they all have to be from… Read More Bach to reality — THUD!
It never fails — we cannot go anywhere without meeting up with people we didn’t know were going to be there! Going to the Bach Collegium Japan’s performance of the Mass in B Minor was no exception. In an earlier post, I already wrote about meeting Bill Beermann (organist) and Craig Mueller (Lutheran pastor) at Lorraine… Read More It’s a small world, AGAIN!
There was a private reception with the Bach Collegium Japan after the concert. I’m so glad Carl bought the type of ticket which allowed us entrance into the private reception after the Bach Collegium Japan’s Mass in B Minor concert! He had brought along his copy of their Bach B-Minor CD and was able to… Read More VIP Reception with the Bach Collegium Japan
How can I possibly describe a concert that was so filled with musicality, with spirituality, with beauty, with so much JOY?! The Bach Collegium Japan’s performance of the Mass in B-Minor was utter perfection in so many ways. The choir was pure heaven, with just four per part, and incredibly well-blended. Every section of the… Read More The experience of a lifetime
We were graciously invited to a pre-concert reception at the home of Lorraine Brugh, a short distance from the Valporaiso campus. Alas, we missed the turn and Carl insisted on driving all the way back to the hotel and starting over! So unfortunately we were a little more than fashionably late. Lorraine had invited about… Read More Pre-Concert Reception
After a hearty breakfast in the hotel, we picked up the car and drove straight to Valparaiso University. We made a beeline for the Chapel of the Resurrection, where the concert will be held tonight. Once inside, we could see a few people setting up the stage area, which will be directly in front of… Read More The Chapel of the Resurrection
We are in Chicago! After an uneventful flight to Los Angeles arriving BEFORE 5 am, we then took the 6 am flight to Chicago and checked into our hotel. It seems like the Arctic here, although I think the temperatures are in the upper 40s and low 50s. Whenever we are in this city, we… Read More The Windy City
Carl and I leave for Chicago tonight, on our way to attend the Bach Collegium Japan’s Mass in B Minor concert, and one book that he’s taking along is “For Beer and the Bible: One Hundred Years at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1900-2000” by Sandra Wagner-Wright. That’s because he will be giving a lecture… Read More For Beer and the Bible
Anyone who is an organist is familiar with the Latin phrase, “Soli Deo Gloria” which means “To God alone the glory.” It’s the motto of the American Guild of Organists, but more than that, it was the way that Johann Sebastian Bach signed his cantatas, using the initials S.D.G. As I’ve written before in this… Read More Soli Deo Gloria
