That’s how theorboist John Lenti described his instrument with its long neck! This week we are hosting John and his wife Sarah while he is visiting Hawaii from Seattle to play the Early Music Hawaii concert this Friday night, September 27th at 7:30 pm at St. Theresa’s Co-Cathedral. The theorbo is somewhat of a curiosity… Read More A ficus tree
Last week was a week of calm for me since I wasn’t able to teach any organ lessons — the reason being was that we hosted organbuilder Hans-Ulrich Erbsloeh from Hamburg, Germany and his colleague, Bernharndt Becker, while they replaced the worn pulldowns on the pedals on the Beckerath organ. It turned out to be… Read More A week of calm before the storm
For all of you who were waiting for the CDs and DVDs of my Bach Great Eighteen Chorales, the wait is no more! One caveat — these are recordings of the live concerts — and there is some audience noise even though at the time I thought the audience was especially quiet. Also since it… Read More The CDs and DVDs are in!
without smartphones and the Internet? Eric Doescher, whom I wrote about in the last post, reminded me of the summer of 1999 when Carl Crosier attended Dennis Keane’s workshop on Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in preparation for the Honolulu performances. Over the past three years, I have written many posts about Georgine and Darel Stark, who have been major players in the music program at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu — she a soprano, and he a violinist. Georgine just sang in my latest Bach Great Eighteen Chorales concert. From a post I wrote about their… Read More A star in the making
Over the last few days, I have been involved in what I call a rescue operation: trying to place a used electronic organ into a good home. Over the past ten years or so, I have placed over a dozen instruments into homes of students — organs that were destined for the landfill. Many of… Read More Rescue operation
Good things come to those who wait. That’s what trombonist Eric Mathis posted on his FaceBook wall today, announcing his engagement to Andrea Dickinson. Eric was Associate Principal Trombone with the Honolulu Symphony for 14 years, taught trombone at the University of Hawaii and was a member of the Honolulu Brass. But Eric has an… Read More Good things come
People have been asking me what my next project will be and that will be a concert on October 19th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Kula, Maui, home to an Oberlinger organ. They are re-dedicating the organ to celebrate its restoration and it was through my Maui organ student, Clayton Logue, that I received the… Read More The man behind the organs
