Good things come to those who wait.

That’s what trombonist Eric Mathis posted on his FaceBook wall today, announcing his engagement to Andrea Dickinson. Eric was Associate Principal Trombone with the Honolulu Symphony for 14 years, taught trombone at the University of Hawaii and was a member of the Honolulu Brass.

But Eric has an LCH connection too — he sang in the LCH mixed choir and the LCH Compline Choir, in addition to playing trombone in the Bach Chamber Orchestra for a number of Bach cantata services. He became a member of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu and attended services whenever possible.

Originally from Prince Edward Island, he returned to Canada where he is the Director of Operations and performs regularly with Symphony Nova Scotia and Maritime Brass Quintet. He now teaches trombone at Dalhousie University and is a coach with the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra.

Eric gave two recitals at LCH, one in which he played trombone music by Canadian composers, and the other called “Trombone Expressions.” Here’s what I wrote in the news release for the second concert, held April 5, 2003: 

Trombonist Eric Mathis will be joined by special guest artists pianist Thomas Yee, soprano Vicki Gorman, and percussionist Riely Francis as he explores, through chamber music, the broad and diverse range of voices available to the trombonist. The program will include compositions by DeFaye, Rush, Albrechtsberger, and Premru.

Congratulations, Eric! How about bringing Andrea to Hawaii?!
