Concerted vespers

This coming Sunday evening, October 30th, is the Eve of Reformation, when the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir and Bach Chamber Orchestra will present a concerted vespers. Most people around LCH would refer to it as Bach Vespers, even though other composers will be represented. It will be a service, in that scripture will be read, there will be prayers, a homily, and an offering taken. Yet some people will think they will have attended a concert, because of all the festive and virtuosic music that will be performed.

Here’s the list of music that will be presented:

Soloists will include Georgine Stark, soprano; Emily Haswell, alto; Renson Madarang, tenor; and Keane Ishii, bass.

The Bach Chamber Orchestra will include Darel Stark and Judy Barrett, violins; Steve Flanter, viola; Karen Fujimoto, cello; John Gallagher, bass; Karla Meyers, flute; Marsha Schweitzer, bassoon; Scott Janusch, oboe; and Jason Byerlotzer, Mark Miyamoto and Karl Krause on trombones. Carl Crosier will be playing harpsichord. What’s always so thrilling is to have this complement of instrumentalists accompany the hymns, in addition to the organ. Seems like the congregational singing is always hearty and spirited at these services.
