Colorful Copenhagen

We are in Copenhagen for only two nights but the colorful city has made quite an impression. This is my third visit here and I’m thinking specifically about the colorful buildings along the waterfront which remind me of Bergen. Couple the building colors with the many summertime flowers and you have quite a picturesque city.

Contrast all the colors of the city with our hotel, the Copenhagen Island, which is ultramodern and all steel and glass, even the elevators, the steps on the staircase, and the glass countertop in the bathroom!

And as I look out my window, we’re directly across the street from IKEA!

Look at this crazy building’s architecture—it’s just a half block from our hotel.

We started the day with a bus tour which ended with the most famous tourist attraction in Copenhagen, the Little Mermaid, based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

We also went inside a small Anglican church which had a historic pipe organ next to a digital keyboard!

Bill Potter and I then toured Frederik’s Church, also called The Marble Church. I read this description of the church: The awe-inspiring Marble Church with the characteristic copper green dome has to be one of the most impressive churches of the city—and is definitely home to one of the best views in town. However, when we arrived at the church, we saw a sign that visits to the dome were cancelled. 😞

I was excited to see two large pipe organs inside, one obviously modern and the other historic.

We then returned and bought tickets for Rosenborg Castle, which I found quite dark and cluttered with too many objects. However a few caught my eye and I enjoyed looking at all the jewels in the treasury which are not allowed to leave the country. If the King or Queen visits a foreign country, they can only wear their personal jewelry, and not any of the jewels which are state-owned.

By now it was starting to rain, and my feet were really tired, so Bill and I took a taxi back to the hotel, where we had a farewell dinner and said goodbye to our fellow travelers.

This was about half of our group of 32 travelers plus Sonia, our tour director (front row, 2nd from right)

Thank you, Sonia, and GoAhead Tours for another memorable trip! Our next destination is Cambridge, England.

    1. Frank, not in the summertime — too much light! I’ll go to Iceland next March to hopefully catch the Northern Lights.
