Caught up in the moment

Waiting for the concert to begin

One of the first things I teach my young students is what to do after your piece is finished:

Press the CANCEL button!

That is to prevent any “oopsies!” if you touch a key by mistake.

But, in spite of all my good intentions, at the end of the opening number (Hallelujah Chorus) from last night’s Iolani School Chorus and Hokuloa Singers concert, there was an “oopsy” as my finger accidentally brushed the high C on its way to the cancel button.

Oops!

Mercifully director John Alexander didn’t mention it to me as he wrote:

“You were magnificent last night, Kathy!!  I feel so blessed to be able to work with you.  ♥️

Aw, shucks!

Last night was John’s 37th Iolani Chorus Spring Concert

My favorite piece was “Sakura, Sakura,” a Japanese folk song arranged by Chris Matthews. On John Alexander’s suggestion, I used the beautiful harp stop on the Aeolian-Skinner organ.

Even John said,

I especially loved Sakura, Sakura — we really created a special mood, a living, breathing haiku almost, and lived in that world we’d created until the gong faded away.  I was ecstatic over the loveliness of the celeste!  I’d forgotten how gorgeous it is.

Here was John’s assessment on Facebook:

It was a glorious spring concert at St. Andrew’s Cathedral! So proud of my students!!! And so grateful to all of my faculty, staff and parent volunteers and to all of our fantastic accompanists!!! #blessed#37springconcertsandcounting #icanrelaxnow
