I have been home for less than two days—it’s 2:25 am and can’t sleep. Ah jet lag, my old friend, what’s new?!
In looking over my photos, I realized I took a bunch more which I haven’t posted yet from our trip to Port Isaac, the real life village of Doc Martin. On our walking tour, we stopped at the Anglican Church of St Peter’s, which had a display of Port Isaac in the foyer. It is the only place of worship today and home to a very small congregation.
St Peter’s was built in 1884, but for a century before, this area was known as a place of Methodism—John Wesley was known to have preached in the Methodist Church on the same road as Doc Martin’s house.
Outside the former church we found a plaque which says: In loving memory of Warwick Richard Guy of Port Isaac. A faithful servant of Christ, and for 62 years a local preacher in the Camelford U.M.F.C. Circuit. He was taken to his reward April 30th, 1905, aged 84 years. Also of Mary, his wife who entered into rest, June 14th, 1904, aged 78 years. She was ever his ready helper in church and home.
Around the town we saw several posters about Easter concerts of St. Endellion—their website says: St Endellion is one of England’s holy places, an ancient collegiate church with six prebends, a mile from the sea and surrounded by fields. Betjeman observed that the church goes on praying even when there is no one in it, and it has a sense of spiritual community which affects so many who come here. For many of the members of the two annual St Endellion Music Festivals, who provide music at an international level.
St. Endellion is only 2.8 miles away from Port Isaac.
Just take a look at this poster!
