For the last part of our tour of Cornwall, we stopped at Jamaica Inn which was built as a coaching inn in 1750, and had an association with smuggling. It was the setting for Daphne du Maurier’s 1936 novel Jamaica Inn, which was made into the film Jamaica Inn in 1939 by Alfred Hitchcock.

We decided to forego eating here because of the limited menu, and voted to go on to Padstow, where there is a picturesque boat harbor which was one of the Doc Martin filming venues. After our huge farmhouse breakfast, Joan Ishibashi and I both had jacket potatoes with a small salad.

You’ll notice in the slideshow below that I took a picture of the Chough Bakery, where Joan and I both ordered traditional Cornish pasties. Doc Martin fans will remember the choughs, birds which attracted tourists to Portwenn.

We next walked to St. Petroc’s Church of Padstow, an Anglican church.

Finally, our tour ended with a trip to Doyden Castle. This is where Mrs Tishall kidnapped Martin and Louisa’s baby and took him to Doyden Castle. What a spectacular way to end our tour! I think this was our favorite place of the entire day, outside of the visit to Port Isaac, which I will write about in the next post.
