Either that, or I have a hole in my  head!

This morning I was happily reading my email messages, and I opened up the one from the Cathedral of St. Andrew. There I read about the concerts that are happening there this weekend, including this note about myself:

This Sunday we are blessed to have Kathy Crosier as our guest organist at all our services, including Choral Evensong which will be led by the Cathedral Men’s Schola. 

Then I read a little bit further about the Early Music Hawaii concert tonight, and then an article about the Hawai’i Youth Opera Chorus: “OPERAtunities 2014 presents ‘Emalani 2, A Youth Opera.” A new opera composed and lyrics by Herb Mahelona, Jr.

 

Based on the life of Queen Emma Rooke.  This 1 act opera in 10 scenes.  The life of Queen Emma after the death of her husband and son, her extended tour to Europe, the Founding of St. Andrew’s Priory School, her political aspirations to her death. This opera was commissioned by HYOC in 2013 specifically for youth performers. All leading roles sung and acted by Gioventu & Cantilena Ensemble members. Joined by St. Andrew’s Priory Choir, Nuuanu Elementary 5th Grade, Kawaiaolaonapukanileo & University of Hawaii Manoa Hawaiian Chorus. Come see the up and coming Opera Stars of Hawaii.

It was only a couple of hours later that I got a phone call from HYOC director, Nola Nahulu:

“Kathy, what are you doing tomorrow afternoon? ”
“Well, to tell you the truth, I was planning to do my laundry.”
“We need an organist because Buddy Naluai is sick! We’ll send someone over to do your laundry!”

The first thing that popped into my head was, “When it rains, it pours!” That is because it was just about a week ago that I got a desperate email from Miguel Felipe: “I’m writing to you in a bit of a pickle (I’m assuming you’ve gotten, oh, a few hundred of these emails since leaving LCH!) I wonder if you would consider [to play a gig for the UH Choirs]. It’s all music you know well or can learn quickly.

Yup, I caved in and said ‘yes’ to accompanying both the HYOC Opera tomorrow and the University Chorus concert next Friday, November 21, including two dress rehearsals. When am I ever home? Good question!

So when it rains, it pours, and why, yes, I do happen to have a hole in my head, but it has been covered over with a titanium plate when I had a craniotomy for meningioma, a benign brain tumor, in 2008. No, in case you’re wondering, I don’t set off any alarms when I go through airport security!

You would have thought that I would have learned by now, to say the small little word with only two letters in it, but I guess people are desperate for organists in this town!
