After driving to Salzburg this morning from Munich, we embarked on a walking tour . . . in the rain. Oh, we’ve had drizzles on this trip but today, I had the challenge of trying to take photos in the rain while holding my broken umbrella. I finally gave up and bought a new umbrella and it made life a whole lot easier! As soon as I bought the new umbrella, though, Bill Potter told me, “Now you just wait. It won’t rain now that you’ve bought a new umbrella!” However, it did rain and hard, intermixed with periods of sunshine.
The movie, “The Sound of Music,” was filmed in Salzburg and our local tour guide, Nicoletta, told us the crew was also challenged by the rainy weather. “But this is typical Salzburg!” She pointed out quite a few places in town where filming occurred which made us want to go back and rewatch the movie.

Here is a collection of photos I took on our walking tour.
Salzburg is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and our local guide pointed out several Mozart landmarks. Later in the afternoon when we were given free time, we also toured two Mozart museums.
In the morning we toured the St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Salzburg, where Mozart was baptized. There are apparently a total of seven (7!) pipe organs in the building. Our guide told us that there have been occasions when all seven have been played together, with seven organists.
Bill Potter and I took a funicular to the Hohensalzburg Fortress at the top of the city, which afforded a spectacular panoramic view. Here’s a description from the website:
A landmark visible from afar, Hohensalzburg Fortress towers majestically above the rooftops of the city of Salzburg. Within its historic walls, you’ll experience times long past firsthand; Behind every archway lies a piece of history. Every room tells exciting stories. Behind every coat of arms are hidden fates. After all, since the 11th century, Hohensalzburg Fortress has grown to become one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, covering an area of 32,000 square meters.
Ohhhhh…. my aching feet! Look how many steps I took today.
