Organists and Organ Playing

All Hallows Eve

It’s All Hallows Eve, also known as Halloween, and three guesses as to where I’ll be tonight?! It’s Thursday, meaning that I’ll be at choir rehearsal!

My sister Margo gave me the T-shirt and the organ mask is from my friend Barbara Adler.

It’s the beginning of a huge, super busy weekend for me — (what’s new?!) — beginning with what is sure to be a long rehearsal tonight with three high masses scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus a trip to Kaua‘i tomorrow morning to teach, plus the communion service at Nu‘uanu Congregational Church early Sunday morning, and Vespers and Benediction at St. Mark’s on Sunday afternoon. Add in six organ students scheduled in the three days —but lucky for me—three of them cancelled and I even have a hair appointment on Saturday night!

Bulletins for the four services at St. Mark’s this weekend.

Last weekend, I attended former student Tyler Ramos‘ blockbuster piano recital, 90 minutes without an intermission: Etude tableaux in A minor, “Little Red Riding Hood”(Rachmaninoff); Kinderszenen Op. 5 “Scenes from Childhood,op. 15: (Schumann); Gaspard de la nuit (Ravel); Litany auf des Fest Allerseelen (Schubert); and Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata (Liszt). I was absolutely dazzled by Tyler’s technical virtuosity and musicianship. In the slideshow below, you’ll see Bill Potter, Dr. Tommy Yee (with wig!), Mark Russell and Rudy Riingen, along with a photo of myself with Tyler.

Tyler took lessons from me before he became overwhelmed with over 100 piano students as he wrote on Facebook:

I can’t believe that I taught 101 students spread out amongst my students at Punahou, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and in my own private practice. At Punahou: 5 group piano classes, 1 partner lesson, 2 music theory classes, and private lessons. At UH: Class Piano, Music Theory III, and applied lessons, in addition to accompanying 2 choirs. I’ve taught people of many ages and experiences, aged 5-retired adult learners, amateurs to undergraduate music majors. Lucky to be so busy and have so much work!

Last week when I posted the birthday video taken by St. Mark’s chorister Yoko Kokuni Kessner, she told me the photos were actually taken last Holy Week, and Yoko didn’t release any of the photos until this past week since she didn’t think they were appropriate for that time of year! Here again is the video as it appeared on Facebook:

Ready for my big weekend!
