Majestic Norwegian fjords

Today we toured Norway by train, bus, and boat … and all in one day, to boot! I believe some tours call this “Norway in a nutshell.” It’s a tour which I’ve taken two times before, and it’s still memorable and beautiful.

We woke up early, only to walk across the street to the train station. How convenient to have the train station so close to our hotel! And what a scenic train ride it was from Bergen to Voss, where we picked up a bus to Gudvangen. Here are just a few scenes we enjoyed from the train , and even though we didn’t have blue skies, at least it wasn’t raining… yet! Snow was visible on the mountain tops.

Our next mode of transportion was a bus, where we stopped at the Stalheim Hotel at Gudvangen and admired the view while a fierce wind blew my hair! (Bill didn’t have to worry about such things!)

We then took a two-hour cruise to Flåm village, where I hit on the souvenir shops and bought gifts for my family. We could really see the dramatic beauty of the fjords now — these are the deep underwater valleys which have been carved out by glaciers.

After a short visit, it was back on the train, this time the Flåm Railway — the stunning train journey from the high mountain station of Myrdal down to the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord at Flåm station.

We stopped momentarily at the spectacular Kjosfossen Waterfall where there was music playing and a dancer.

There are just a few people here! This photo represents about 1/10th of the people who got out of the train to look at the waterfall.

We got back to the hotel at 6:20 pm, after having left that morning at 8:15 am. What a day! But it wasn’t over yet …
