Organists and Organ Playing

Land of Fire and Ice

Well, you’ll never guess where I am again—my home away from home, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu! This time I will take a very quick trip to California to celebrate my grandson’s 7th birthday. People at my two churches won’t even know that I’ll be gone—I’ll be back for Thursday choir rehearsal!

At the end of the month, I will be taking another quick trip to California — to attend the National Convention of the Anerican Guild of Organists in San Francisco. My former student, Joey Fala, is one of the featured artists so you can imagine that we in Hawaii are especially proud of our homeboy making it to the national stage!

In July Bill Potter and I will travel to Sweden, Norway and Denmark in a GoAhead tour called “Highlights of Scandinavia,” before traveling to Worcester, England, for the Three Choirs Festival.

But what I’m planning now is a fully-escorted tour of “Iceland: Reykjavik and the Northern Lights” in March of 2025!

Iceland develops a completely different appeal during the winter months. Occasional snowfalls make the landscape even more otherworldly, roaring waterfalls freeze into icicles, and the night sky often lights up with one of nature’s most staggering phenomena: the northern lights. Discover the sites of Reykjavik’s city center before setting off to admire glaciers, geothermal marvels, and the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis.

These trips are planned for us, and the following is included in this trip: Every night in 4-star hotels,
breakfast every day, a couple of 3-course dinners, guided sightseeing tours with an expert/local tour director, and a small group size of 15-38 travelers.

Besides, there are two excursions: One to the Blue Lagoon (or to the Sky Lagoon, in case the Blue Lagoon is shut down by a volcanic eruption … like now!) and the other to the Lava Tunnel.

Please check my website for more information on the travel dates and itineraries I have planned:

Spots are limited and first come first served. If you sign up in June you will receive a $75 discount per person, and more if you’ve traveled with me before. If you sign up with the interest free automatic payment plan your reservation is risk free and fully refundable for 60 days.

I hope you can join me! We will have so much fun!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks — since the middle of May, I’ve played three funerals, in addition to my three services every Sunday, including Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity and today Corpus Christi — and I will play another funeral on the day after I return from California. You die — I play!

Last Monday, the Hawaii Chapter of the American Guild of Organists held its Annual Meeting, and I was re-elected Dean (for my umpteenth term). We’re a good looking bunch, even if we are a herd of dinosaurs! And we do have some young’uns — we’re not all retired!

Back row: Karl Bachman, Daniel Welch, Barry Wenger, Leslie Segundo, Steve Hoover, Mark Wong, Bob Alder. Second row: Margaret Lloyd, Rick Mazurowski, Gloria Faltstrom, Janet Sharp, Gwen Miller, Don Conover, Guy Merola. Front row: Nanami Mata, Kathy Crosier, Elizabeth Wong
