Getting to Cleveland was uneventful, after an unexpected tumble in a restaurant the night before when I reached over to retrieve my purse from across the table and fell into my grandson’s high chair. My first thought as I was falling was, “oh no! I have to play three concerts this week!” However, except for a band-aid on my knee, I’m fine.
My friend Joan Ishibashi met me at the airport and we drove to the beautiful home of Dave and Mary Ellen Szamborski to enjoy pizza, salad and interesting conversation.
On Sunday morning Joan took me to Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal) where I attended the Choral Eucharist. There was lots of familiar music, both organ and choral, (Gloria by Robert Powell, Sanctus and Agnus Dei by Schubert) but I was a tad disappointed that organist Todd Wilson was not here today—the service was played by the assistant.
There is a large Flentrop organ in the rear gallery.
The church is presently raising money to restore an historic Aeolian-Skinner organ (at a total cost of $839,000) which will be placed in the chancel. Read all about the project here.
One reason that I was at the Trinity Cathedral service is to reunite with David Lawrence, whom I met in Greece this past summer. David showed me a fabulous Tiffany window in the sacristy.
After the service David and I went to lunch at Soho Chicken and Whiskey, and shortly after we sat down, I looked for my phone to take a picture of us. Slightly panicked when I couldn’t find it in my purse, I figured I must have left it in the car, so we told the waitress so as not to alarm her when we left.
And there, on the ground by the passenger side, was my phone! (Groan!) I guess I should be grateful that no one else found it, as my credit cards were inside it, but it does remind me of the time I left my phone in my Amsterdam hotel. (Read my post “Catastrophic Kathy” for all the gory details!) I had vowed to get another type of phone case where I didn’t also store my credit cards, and in fact, I’ve gone through several phone cases since that Amsterdam trip, but I guess I didn’t learn my lesson!
I had brought David some macadamia shortbread cookies and macadamia chocolates from Hawaii (as you can see on the table), and just as we were pulling up to Dave and Mary Ellen’s, we realized that we had left them on the table. A quick phone call to restaurant saved the day, and David quickly returned to the restaurant to retrieve them.
I guess we were both lucky!
