We had the morning free so I chose to go back to Salzburg Cathedral (the Dom) where I had gone to the World Choral Fest 2018 concert last night.
It was a program of music by Mozart and American composer, Dan Forrest, who happened to be in the audience last night.
The 100+ singers were mostly high school students from Kansas and college students from Marist College. They were accompanied by a brass, string and percussion orchestra which on occasion drowned out the choir.
The Cathedral was founded in 774 by St. Rupert and the building caught fire in 1181 and rebuilt. It was also damaged heavily during World War II as you can see by the photo I took in a display. It was not until 1959 that the cathedral was fully restored.
Of course, my attention was on the four baroque organs located on the four corners of the transepts.
It was not until today that I was able to take a photo of the organ in the rear gallery. You’ll enjoy this video of the Salzburg Cathedral organ.
On a large poster outside the building, I found notices of upcoming concerts, and one in particular caught my eye: August 18 will feature five organists playing all five pipe organs in one concert. Wouldn’t I want to be here for that one!
[…] There are more photos of the other organs from a blog by Katherine Crosier, wife of Carl Crosier (1945-2014), who was the cantor at Lutheran Church of Honolulu. If you look at her blog article, you will see a video of one of the Salzburg organs being played. http://insanity.blogs.lchwelcome.org/2018/07/03/5-organs-in-salzburg-cathedral/ […]
