Barbershop at Big Sing

19th Avenue Barbershop QuartetSo many people were laughing so hard at last weekend’s Big Sing massed choirfest, they missed the clever parody lyrics by the 19th Avenue Barbershop Quartet (Mark Conching, Bryce Irvine, Rob Hartley, and Tom Hutton). Mark was kind enough to send them along, so here are the original lyrics to Cole Porter’s Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love), along with their parody lyrics.

original lyrics:

When the little blue bird, who has never said a word, starts to sing, Spring! Spring!
When the little blue bell, in the bottom of the dell, starts to ring, Ding! Ding!
When the little blue clerk, in the middle of his work, starts a tune to the moon up above.
It is nature, that’s all, simply telling us to fall in love

(and that’s why) Birds do it, bees do it;
even educated fleas do it
Let’s do it.  Let’s fall in love (let’s fall in love)
In Spain, the best upper sets do it,
Lithuanians and Letts do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love (baby let’s fall in love)

The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it,
Not to mention the Finns
Folks in Siam do it,
Think of siamese twins

Some Argentines without means do it,
People say in Boston even beans do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love (come on, let’s fall in love)

parody lyrics:

Husky-voiced altos, they say, do it
Basses, when they’re shown the way do it
Let’s do it, baby, let’s fall in love (everybody’s falling in love)

Barbershop singers in accord do it,
Some sopranos, looking bored, do it
Why not do it?  Let’s fall in love

Singers from all different lands do it,
They’ve a special rapport
Conductors, with their hands, do it
(and oh!)Those composers really know how to score!

Let’s make a plan
Yes, we can do it
Even counter tenors, to a man, do it
(so) Let’s do it, Let’s fall in love
