Maundy Thursday marathon

The color is white for Maundy Thursday.

There were twenty-two (count ’em!) pieces of music in tonight’s Maundy Thursday service, and there would have been twenty-three had the footwashing not been so efficient. We unfortunately had to cut “Ubi caritas” by Maurice Duruflé because no more music was needed during the footwashing rite.

Here is the repertoire:

Organ Prelude: O Lamm Gottes unschuldig, BWV 656 (J.S. Bach)
Introit: Nos autem gloriari (Mode IV)
Entrance Hymn: Love divine, all loves excelling (Hyfrydol) – Last verse harmonization by Carl Crosier
Kyrie (Jacques Berthier)
Glory to God in the highest (Peter R. Hallock) – with bells

(it was after the Gloria that I closed up and locked the organ)

Psalm 116:10-17 (Hallock) – accompanied only by bells
Gospel Acclamation: I give you a new commandment (Aaron David Miller) – with bells
Hymn: Where charity and love prevail (Twenty-Fourth)

The choir sings "Ave verum corpus" at the communion.

Antiphons during the Maundy:
Antiphon I Mandatum Novum (Mode II)
Antiphon II Postquam surrexit (Mode IV)
Antiphon III Domine Jesu (Mode II)
Antiphon VIII Ubi caritas (Maurice Duruflé) <– this was deleted
Offertory Motet: Jesu dulcis memoria (Tomas Luis de Victoria)
Sursum Corda (Traditional)
Holy, holy, holy (David Hurd, New Plainsong)
Christ has died (plainsong)
Great Amen (plainsong)
Lord’s Prayer (McNeil Robinson)
Lamb of God  (David Hurd, New Plainsong)
Communion Motet: Ave verum corpus (William Byrd)
Transfer of the Holy Eucharist Hymn: Now my tongue (Pange lingua)
Tantum ergo (Maurice Duruflé)
Motets during Stripping of the Altar:
Amicus meus/Positively 4th Street (Paul Crabtree)
Judas mercatos pessimus/The Wicked Messenger (Crabtree)

After the last note was sounded, I pressed the dimmer switch for the lights, and we all walked out in darkness and in silence.

  1. My friend and I went to this service. I read about Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Holy Week music in the Star Advertiser and was eager to hear some beautiful liturgical arrangements. You did not disappoint. The whole service was a celebration of God’s love, and the delight His people take in glorifying Him with the talent He gave them. What a joyful experience. Thank you and all the other musicians so much for worshipping and serving Him so faithfully. My friend and I were truly blessed by it.
