For the last month, the Concert Committee has been hard at work to finalize a season brochure to send out to our music mailing list. I just got a notice today that the brochures are being delivered TOMORROW, and so the next step will be to stick on address labels and take them to bulk mail. We’re printing several hundred extra so that people can hand them out to their friends and neighbors.
On the front cover we have used the image from Jan van Eyck’s famous altarpiece (“Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”) at Ghent, Belgium, showing St. Cecilia playing the organ. Carl and I have actually seen this masterpiece in person at St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent, and it is one of several panels which show angels singing and playing music. Supposedly each angel has a different expression depending on what note they are singing, and so experts have determined what pitches are being sung! I assume they were singing something in harmony!
On my twenty-fifth anniversary as organist at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu (May 2003), Carol Langner put together a beautiful poster to commemorate the occasion and used this same image. You can click the graphic to the right to see an enlarged view of it and read the text.
We used another section of the Ghent altarpiece to highlight the Bach B-Minor Mass.
